Common questions
OneFolio never stores your bank login credentials. We connect through Plaid, which many financial apps use, and bank access is read-only. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and your bank access tokens are encrypted with AES-256. Row-level security and per-user checks keep your data separated from other users’. Only a small number of authorized OneFolio staff can reach production data, for support and security.
It depends on your plan. Essential and Core connect as many checking, savings and credit card accounts as you like from most US banks and credit unions, through Plaid. Folio connects one bank: a new bank link works only while you have no accounts in OneFolio, and an account imported from a CSV file counts, so link your bank before you import. On any plan you can also upload CSV statements for banks Plaid does not support.
OneFolio uses a multi-layered approach: first checking your custom rules, then merchant mapping databases, then bank-supplied categories, and finally keyword-based matching. Every auto-categorization shows a confidence score, and you can override any category. OneFolio learns from your corrections over time.
OneFolio analyzes your transaction history to find recurring charges from the same merchant. If we see 2 or more charges at regular intervals (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual) with consistent amounts, we flag it as a subscription and estimate the next charge date.
Budgets are tracked per category on a monthly cycle. OneFolio sums all transactions in that category for the current month, excluding transfers and hidden transactions, and compares the total against your set limit. You see real-time progress bars and get alerts as you approach or exceed your budget.
Money health is a score from 0 to 100 built from your bank data alone, in three parts. Cash flow (40 points): keeping more than you spend over the last six full months, paying bills without overdraft, returned-payment or late fees over the last 12 months, and having the next 30 days covered. Cushion (35 points): how many months of spending you hold in cash, and whether that cushion is growing. Debt (25 points): debt payments against income, and card balances against their limits. A check without enough data is not scored and the others are rescaled, and a number appears once cash flow, bills and cushion can be measured and there are 90 days of history. Budgets, goals and quizzes never change it. It is worked out every night and published once a week, on Monday in your time zone or on the first night your score is ready, and every check shows the fact behind it and the one move that raises it.
